Another way to create a style, is by using the New Style dialog box.  This allows you to create styles for future use in the document, instead of by an example you have typed.  Some prefer to create all of their styles first using this dialog box, before starting their document.

1.  From the Format menu, select Style.  The Style dialog box appears as shown below.  Choose the New button.

2.  The New Style dialog box appears.  Type a name for your style in the Name box.  In this example, I am creating a style called "Subheading".

3.  If the style is for characters, as in a title, select Character from the Style type drop down menu.  Choose Paragraph if the settings are for paragraphs - attributes like line spacing and indentation.

4.  Choose Format and select and modify the attributes listed until you are satisfied with the style.

Note:  Once you have defined all the attributes needed, you can assign a shortcut keystroke to the style with the Shortcut Key button.  This allows you to press the shortcut keys on your keyboard to use the style, without having to choose the name from the Style box list.

5.  Choose OK.  Choose New again to define another style, or choose Apply or Close to return to the document.

Modifying (Redefining) a Style

One of the greatest advantages of using styles is that when you modify the style, every area in your document where the style was used is updated to reflect the changes. There are two ways to modify a style.

First, you can modify a style by selecting text containing the style and changing its attributes with the regular toolbars and/or menus.  Once you have changed the attributes, simply click your mouse once in the Style box on the formatting toolbar and press Enter on your keyboard.  There is no need to retype the name.  When the Modify Style dialog box appears, as shown below, select Update the style to reflect recent changes and choose OK.  This will update all the areas in your document using that style with the changes you have made. If you do not want this box to appear again, check Automatically update the style from now on before choosing OK.  The "Reapply" option is there in case you change your mind and want the text to return to the previously defined style.
