The
Tabs dialog box allows you to set all your tabs at the same
time with exact measurements, unlike using the ruler where your
click determines the location. It also allows you to add a
leader, modify tabs, and clear tab settings.
First, place your insertion point on the line where
the tabs are to start. From the Format menu, choose Tabs.
The Tabs dialog box displays as shown below.
To set a tab:
Type in the position on
the ruler where you would like the tab to be placed in the Tab
stop position field. The measurement is in inches -
and decimals, such as 1.25, can be used.
Next, in the Alignment
field, choose which type of alignment you need for this tab.
If you need a leader
for the tab, choose the radio button for the leader from the
examples shown in the Leader field. The default is
always None.
When everything is as
you intend, choose the Set button. This adds the
tab to the list under Tab stop position.
Repeat steps 1-4 until
you have all the needed tabs set. When finished, choose OK
to return to the document. Your tabs appear on the ruler.
Begin typing your list,
pressing the Tab key in between each item.
Setting the tab in the
above graphic would give us a nice leader tab, like the one shown
below:
Modifying
Tabs
You can modify tabs by
either: 1) Selecting the lines where you want the tab to be
modified and dragging the tab to a new position on the ruler; or 2)
Selecting the lines where you want the tab to be modified, choosing
the tab from the tab list in the Format/Tab dialog
box, adjusting the settings, and choosing the Set button.
Clearing
(deleting) Tabs
Tabs can be deleted using
the ruler, by dragging the tab below the ruler and releasing your
mouse. When you drag a tab below the ruler, it becomes grayed
on the ruler, and you can then release your mouse to delete it:
Be careful to position your mouse over that tiny
tab! If you don't position it correctly, your click will add
another tab. Also, be sure to select ALL lines in your list
where you want this tab to be deleted before you drag it off the
ruler. Otherwise, your tab will only be removed from the line
where your insertion point is located.
You can also clear tabs by using the Tabs
dialog box:
First, select all lines
where you want the tab to be removed.
From the Format
menu, choose Tabs.
Select the tab you wish
to remove from the tab list, and choose the Clear button.
You can also open the dialog box and choose Clear All to
remove all listed tabs.
Choose OK when
you are finished clearing tabs.
Never have misaligned lists
again! Use tabs to flawlessly align your list every time - and
remember, practice makes perfect when working with Word tabs.
