In
addition to selecting text by dragging the mouse, Word allows the
use of mouse clicks to select specific types of text. These
not only save you time, but are often times easier to use than
dragging.
Selection
Shortcuts
To
select:
a single word, double-click the word.
an entire paragraph, triple-click anywhere inside the paragraph OR
double-click the left margin.
a sentence,
press and hold
[Ctrl] and click the sentence.
a line (all text in one line from left to right margins),
single-click the left margin.
an entire document, triple click the left margin OR press
[Ctrl]
+ [A].

Clicks
You
should see a right-hand pointing arrow when you use clicks on the
margin to select text. The graphic below shows the proper
arrow needed for selecting.
Scrolling Issue
Versions
of Word previous to 2002 have a scrolling issue. When trying to
select text by dragging beyond the current screen view, the screen
scrolls by in a blur of speed and users cannot readily tell where to
stop dragging. Thankfully, Word 2002 has the problem fixed!
If you use previous versions of Word, here's how to combat that
nasty scrolling:
Single-click the left margin outside the first line for selection.
This selects the entire first line.
Use the
scrollbar to find the last line for the selection. Press and hold
[Shift]
and single-click the left margin outside the last line. Word
selects the first line, last line, and everything in between.
